Dog Clubs - General (14)
n 1975 Australian Shepherd Club of San Diego County (ASCSDC) became an affiliate club of the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). ASCSDC held it's first sanctioned conformation and obedience show the same year in Escondido, California. ASCSDC proudly hosts approximately ten sanctioned conformation shows and obedience trials. The club has approximately thirty members active in all areas of competition or therapy work with service dogs.
In 1981 a merit program was started, recognizing and honoring the achievements of our members and their dogs. We offer performance class awards for Aussie and Non- Aussie competitors. Adults and juniors are awarded in all areas of competition at our annual banquet.
We have a Yahoo Group e-mail list for members. The mailing list keeps club members informed of club changes, business, upcoming events, brags, show results and other pertinent club information.
Our main goal is preserving the integrity of the Australian Shepherd. We do this through education. We offer educational talks with a variety of guest speakers. We give handling clinics covering all areas of dog related activities. Also, we participate in community awareness programs.
The club takes great pride in our junior program. We feel it is our responsibility to educate and support our junior membership. After all, the juniors today are the future of the Australian Shepherd.

In 2002, a group of dedicated Great Pyrenees owners in Southern California found there was an interest for fun activities with their Pyrs. We took this interest and formed The Great Pyrenees Alliance of the West (GPAW), which resulted in becoming an affiliate of the Great Pyrenees Club of America. Our goal is to provide continuing education about our wonderful and unique breed and host a variety of activities we can enjoy with our Pyrs. Our activities run the gamut from parades (Christmas, Fourth of July and the Santa Barbara Big Dog) to wine tasting fund raising, to a tour of a working apple orchard, to professional picture taking of our dogs in the California poppy fields, walks sponsored by local community organizations and versatility events. We also have members who cart and some who spin Pyr fur, and others who are very involved doing therapy work with their Pyrs.

The Irish Setter Club of San Diego was established in 1968, and incorporated in 1974. We held our first banquet and installation of officers in January of 1969. Over the next 10 years, we held many fun matches, “ribbon” matches as they were known then. With our goal of holding an AKC sanctioned specialty and obedience trials in our sights, we began holding AKC B (OB) matches, and finally our required AKC A (OA) match. We held our first AKC licensed specialty and obedience trial on May 16, 1980, with Irish Setter legend, Ted Eldridge, as our conformation judge. Since then, our club has continued to grow with the focus to protect and advance the interests of the Irish Setter.
The club currently has meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, at the Allied Gardens Rec Center. Our specialty show is currently held in conjunction with the Silver Bay Kennel Club in February, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Other fun activities for our members and their Irish include marching in the San Diego St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Balboa Park, dog play-days and picnics, an annual Awards Banquet, and a great Christmas Party with a gift exchange that involves “stealing” others’ gifts! Many of our club members are also involved with obedience, agility, and rally performance events, which allow them to work closely and have a lot of fun with their dogs.
The ISCSD is also involved with Rescue, and works closely with both the National and the Southern California Rescue volunteers, and local animal shelters, taking Irish Setters into the program and finding them a new “forever home” and family.

Our mission as the Newfoundland Club of San Diego is to protect and celebrate the Newfoundland dog as a companion and working partner through fun, fellowship, activities and education.
In October 1986, Margaret Lowthian Cook and Carol Walker organized the first club function of the newly formed San Diego Rhodesian Ridgeback Club (SDRRC). The fun match was on a grassy site in Kearny Mesa. The day was clear and sunny and a buffet lunch was prepared. Everyone had a wonderful time as the club boasted 15 entries with 5 dogs in its first Parade of Champions. The goal was to bring Ridgeback owners together to become acquainted and to have fun with their dogs. Over 20 years later, this is still a primary function of the club. In addition to fun, the club also supports breed rescue, sponsors information seminars for members and guests, and promotes education to the public about our wonderful breed.

The San Diego Dachshund Club, a non-profit organization of more than 395 members, was founded in 1951. Membership is open to all who own or have an interest in dachshunds, and is not restricted to those living in the southern California area. The primary aims of the Club are to improve all varieties of the breed, assist owners and their dachshunds, and sponsor related activities that promote education, health, training, show competition, and dachshund rescue. With the exception of AKC competitions, San Diego Dachshund Club activities involve all dachshunds, not just those of show quality.
These activities include the annual SDDC Dachshund Specialty Shows in March, other events such as puppy matches, the annual Summer Picnic and Hallo-Wiener Picnic, the annual “Vernal EquiDox” and “Walkin’ in a Wiener Wonderland” events in Balboa Park, and several dachshund Meet the Breed presentations. All members receive a very popular newsletter containing a wide variety of information about dachshunds and Club activities. In addition, excellent dachshund-related programs are presented to those who attend the Club’s monthly meetings, normally held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Allied Gardens Recreation Center. This web site provides detailed information and a calendar of events for all of these activities, membership information, as well as Club objectives and guidelines.
